Strength, Useful Gods & Seasonal Regulation
Distinguish between strong/weak Day Master, Useful Gods, Supporting Gods, Problem-Remedy, Bridging, and seasonal temperature/moisture regulation.
On This Page (6)
Strength (Wangshuai) describes the relative energy of the Day Master and various Five Elements within a chart; Useful Gods (Yong Shen) address how to make the structure function effectively; Seasonal Regulation (Tiaohou) examines temperature, dryness, and moisture resulting from the birth season. While they share vocabulary, they do not form a single rigid scoring rubric. "Strong" and "weak" are traditional technical classifications, not indicators of physical health, willpower, competence, or personal fortune.
What to Examine When Assessing Strength
A comprehensive assessment integrates the following evidence:
| Dimension | What to Examine | What Not to Simplify |
|---|---|---|
| In Season (De Ling) | Whether Day Master and key elements receive seasonal support from the Month Command | Do not convert the Month Command into a fixed year-round percentage |
| Rooted (De Di) | Whether stems have roots in branch hidden stems and whether roots are damaged | Do not reduce evaluation to a binary "rooted / unrooted" checkbox |
| Supported (De Zhu) | Whether Friends, Rob Wealth, or Resource stems are revealed, rooted, and supportive | Do not simply count matching characters |
| Draining/Exhausting (Ke Xie Hao) | How Officer/Killings, Food/Hurting, and Wealth discipline, drain, or consume the Day Master | Do not treat overcoming and draining as inherently negative |
| Structural Shifts | Whether combinations, clashes, and seasonal unions alter positions and dynamics | Do not overlook proximity, season, and whether combinations actually form |
Quantity is merely a clue. A stem that is in season and deeply rooted cannot be equated with an out-of-season, unrooted stem; the same chart may also reveal different priorities under Pattern, Balancing, or Seasonal Regulation approaches.
Strength Is Not a Simple Binary
Charts are variously described as strong, weak, balanced, dominant (Zhuanwang), or following (Congshi), but these are not precise measurements. Special patterns have strict qualifying conditions; a chart cannot be casually deemed a "Follow Pattern" simply because one element is abundant. When a chart is near the boundary, record supporting and opposing evidence across multiple perspectives rather than arbitrarily forcing a label.
Useful Gods, Supporting Gods, and Unfavorable Gods
These terms carry distinct meanings across different schools:
| Useful God Approach | Core Question | Operational Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern Useful God | How does the Month Command establish a pattern, and how do core dynamics succeed or fail? | Not equivalent to "the missing element in the chart" |
| Balancing Useful God | Is the Day Master and overall energy too strong or too weak? | Strength evaluation must first rest on complete evidence |
| Seasonal Regulation God | How do seasonal cold, heat, dryness, or dampness affect vitality? | Cannot apply rigid rules like "winter always needs fire, summer always needs water" across the whole chart |
| Problem-Remedy God | What is the primary bottleneck in the structure, and what addresses it? | "Problem and remedy" is a metaphor, not a medical diagnosis |
| Bridging God | When two forces clash, can an intermediary element restore flow? | The intermediary element must genuinely exist with conditions to act |
| Follow & Dominant Patterns | Has one force formed an overwhelming, irreversible trend? | Qualifying criteria are strict; abundance alone does not constitute a Follow Pattern |
"Supporting Gods" (Xi Shen) generally refer to elements that assist overall structural health, while "Unfavorable Gods" (Ji Shen) refer to elements that exacerbate imbalance; however, one must declare the analytical framework used, the rationale, and the conditions under which conclusions would adjust.
Seasonal Regulation Is Not Simply Weather
Seasonal Regulation builds upon the birth season to evaluate whether the chart is excessively cold, hot, dry, or damp. For instance, winter births often value warmth and growth conditions, while summer births often value moisture and cooling, but evaluation must still account for specific Day Stems, month commands, roots, and combinations. Seasonal Regulation is structural terminology, not a medical inference of body temperature, illness, or climate preference.
Why "Supplementing What Is Missing" Is Unreliable
An absent element is not necessarily needed by the chart, and an abundant element is not necessarily functional. Names, colors, spatial orientations, or jewelry cannot be treated as deterministic solutions for health, wealth, or relationship challenges. The value of Useful Gods lies in comparing traditional interpretive pathways, not in generating consumer anxiety.
First confirm relationship names in the Ten Gods System, then examine how Chart Patterns observe structure from month commands and combinations. Tracing textual origins and methodological nuances can be continued in the Classics & Schools Map.
A Verifiable Explanation of Strength and Useful Gods
A sound explanation should enumerate the Month Command, rooting, revelation, support, draining, exhausting, and combination shifts, while declaring whether it adopts Pattern, Balancing, Seasonal Regulation, or another standard. If an analysis simply pronounces a chart "strong" or "needing a certain element" without chart evidence, counter-conditions, and uncertainty boundaries, that conclusion cannot be verified.
