Ten-Step BaZi Reading Method
A ten-step reading workflow from birth data verification to natal structure, patterns, and timing cycles, helping beginners avoid jumping to hasty conclusions.

The most common pitfall in reading BaZi is not knowing too few terms, but disorder in sequence: jumping to conclusions from an isolated Ten God, symbolic star (Shensha), or annual influence label before verifying birth records. The ten-step method below first establishes verifiable chart facts, compares traditional interpretations, and only then discusses practical themes. It is a reading checklist, not an automated algorithm producing a single outcome.
Step 1: Verify Birth Records
Record the Gregorian or lunar date, local clock time, birthplace, time source, and margin of error. Match the historical timezone and daylight saving time active at that time and place; keep alternative charts open when birth occurs near Lichun, solar term transitions, 23:00, 00:00, or hour boundaries.
Start with Four Pillars & Calculation Standards and True Solar Time, Timezones & Day Boundaries. If the baseline Four Pillars cannot be verified, pause before proceeding further.
Step 2: Identify Four Pillars and Day Master
Distinguish the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars, labeling the stem and branch of each, with the Day Stem as the Day Master. Note the solar term boundaries, day boundary standard, and solar time options used, avoiding rigid personality labeling at this stage.
Step 3: Observe Month Command and Season
Identify the solar term month of birth, noting the Month Branch and season. Observe which elements are in season and which are cold, hot, dry, or damp; these are structural clues, not direct inferences of personality or health. Check baseline properties in Yin-Yang, Five Elements & Interactions.
Step 4: Examine Hidden Stems, Revelation, and Roots
Separate the four branches using a consistent hidden stems table, checking whether stems are rooted, whether hidden stems are revealed, whether roots are clashed or combined, and distinguishing primary qi from other stems. Avoid ungrounded percentage formulas. See Hidden Stems & Month Command.
Step 5: Convert to Ten Gods
Label the Year Stem, Month Stem, Hour Stem, and each hidden stem as Ten Gods relative to the Day Master; apply the same rules to Luck Cycle and Annual Influence stems. Verify relationship names first before mapping to people, careers, or events. Use the Ten Gods Lookup Table.
Step 6: Evaluate Strength and Circulation
Enumerate factors of season, rooting, support, overcoming, draining, exhausting, and combination shifts. Document evidence supporting both "strong" and "weak" assessments before deciding which is better supported. Quantity cannot replace season, roots, and position; borderline charts permit preserving both interpretations. See Strength, Useful Gods & Seasonal Regulation.
Step 7: Identify Patterns and Useful God Frameworks
Examine whether the Month Command, revealed stems, and Ten Gods combinations establish a pattern, then compare Balancing, Seasonal Regulation, Problem-Remedy, Bridging, or Follow standards. Explicitly declare the textual definitions adopted, noting fulfillment criteria and counter-conditions; do not reason backwards from a career to a Chart Pattern.
Step 8: Check Combinations, Clashes, Punishments, and Harms
Systematically examine stem combinations, branch harmonies, clashes, punishments, harms, and destructions, noting position, season, roots, completeness, and transformation conditions. Focus on explaining which roots, Ten Gods, or pattern conditions are altered rather than simply counting interactions. Refer to Combinations, Clashes, Punishments & Harms.
Step 9: Cross-Reference Practical Themes
When discussing temperament, work, resources, relationships, or wellness, evaluate relevant Ten Gods, pillar positions, combinations, and real-world circumstances together, never relying on a single character. Frame traditional imagery into observable questions—such as "under clear structures or flexible spaces, which environment fosters better contribution?"—rather than "fated for a specific job."
Medical, legal, investment, marital, and psychological topics must strictly adhere to Applications & Boundaries.
Step 10: Layer Luck Cycles and Annual Influences
First evaluate the Luck Cycle, then the Annual Influence, and finally Monthly Influences if needed, observing how timing reinforces, constrains, or reorganizes the natal chart. Verify forward/reverse direction and start timing, check whether past experiences align with the interpretation, and document inconsistencies. See Luck Cycles, Annual Influences & Timing.
What a Qualified Reading Should Contain
- Explicit statement of birth data sources, error margins, and calculation standards;
- Clear distinction between verifiable chart facts, traditional rules, and editorial commentary;
- Chart evidence supporting conclusions alongside evidence pointing in alternative directions;
- Transparent acknowledgment of uncertainties, school differences, and invalidation conditions;
- Actionable, verifiable real-world steps;
- Rejection of fear-inducing language around health, relationships, or wealth;
- Clear boundary that AI-generated prose does not constitute calculation fact or professional counsel.
Recommended Chart Reading Record Format
| Layer | Recorded Content | Example Format |
|---|---|---|
| Input Layer | Birth record, location, timezone, error margin | "Hospital record 14:52, location matched, time uncertainty ~5 min" |
| Calculation Layer | Four Pillars, day boundary, solar time options | Retain civil time chart alongside boundary-shift alternative |
| Structural Layer | Month Command, Hidden Stems, Ten Gods, roots, clashes | Tabulate evidence rather than writing bare conclusions |
| Methodological Layer | Definitions used for pattern, strength, and regulation | Note textual standards and points of divergence |
| Temporal Layer | Cycle direction, start age, annual triggers | Describe structural shifts before discussing practical themes |
| Boundary Layer | Uncertainties and items requiring real-world verification | List alternative interpretations and professional referral areas |
After completing structural reading, test observations against lived experience. To see how deterministic calculation and AI prose are separated on this site, read How AI BaZi Works; to review report presentation, see the Sample Reading.
