BaZi, also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, records a moment of birth using four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches representing the year, month, day, and hour, totaling eight characters. Traditional Ziping BaZi takes the Day Stem (Day Master) as the central point of observation to analyze how the qi of the Five Elements interacts across seasons, positions, and structural combinations.
The eight characters are calendar records; the subsequent concepts of Ten Gods, strength, patterns, and luck cycles belong to traditional interpretive frameworks. When studying BaZi, one should separately verify whether the chart calculation is accurate and whether the subsequent interpretation is sound.

Why Different Schools Reach Different Conclusions
Traditional metaphysics is not a single uniform algorithm. The Pattern method (Geju) emphasizes the Month Command and structural fulfillment; the Strength/Balancing method (Wangshuai) focuses on Day Master endurance and Five Elements balance; the Seasonal Regulation method (Tiaohou) prioritizes warmth, cold, dryness, and dampness; and Image methods (Xiangfa) focus on positional relationships and symbolic imagery. While they share common terminology, they may define Useful Gods and prioritize judgments quite differently.
Therefore, a rigorous reading must declare which standards are adopted and cite the chart evidence used, rather than treating any single label as an absolute conclusion.
Reading Principles
- Do not equate "what element is missing" directly with "what element must be supplemented."
- Do not equate "strong or weak Day Master" with physical health, moral character, or social status.
- Do not base definitive judgments on an isolated Ten God, symbolic star (Shensha), or clash/combination.
- For medical, marital, legal, or investment matters, metaphysical content cannot substitute for qualified professional counsel.
BaZi is best approached as a traditional cultural knowledge system and a framework for self-reflection, rather than an unalterable decree of fate.
