Combinations, clashes, punishments, harms, and destructions between stems and branches describe affinities, constraints, transitions, and energetic shifts within a chart. Relational tables indicate which pairs form traditional relationships; they do not determine on their own whether a relationship is fulfilled, how potent it is, or what specific event will occur.

Heavenly Stems

• Five Combinations: Jia-Ji, Yi-Geng, Bing-Xin, Ding-Ren, Wu-Gui.

Heavenly Stem combinations do not automatically transform into a new element. Successful transformation requires seasonal support, root backing, positional proximity, and overall structural momentum; without these conditions, combinations represent mutual attraction, tethering, or altered modes of interaction.

Earthly Branches

• Six Harmonies (Liu He): Zi-Chou, Yin-Hai, Mao-Xu, Chen-You, Si-Shen, Wu-Wei.

Six Steps for Evaluating Relationships

1. Clarify the interaction plane. Distinguish stem relationships, branch relationships, and hidden stem interactions without conflating them.
2. Examine position and distance. Adjacent stems/branches interact most directly; relationships across separated pillars require assessing intermediary conditions.
3. Examine Month Command and roots. Elements supported by season and roots exhibit greater persistence; do not decide outcomes solely on seasonal command.
4. Examine structural completeness. When a Three Harmony or Seasonal Union lacks one branch, do not treat it as a full union; prioritize when multiple relationships coexist.
5. Check for transformation catalysts. Combining without transforming, clashing without dispersing, and punishing without severe disruption are common.
6. Return to structural outcomes. Explain which Ten Gods, root supports, or pattern conditions are altered, rather than leaping directly to external events.

Clashes Are Not Calamities; Combinations Are Not Purely Beneficial

In traditional interpretation, clashes may represent movement, separation, realignment, activation, or breaking through constraints; combinations may represent partnership, integration, tethering, or temporary loss of original function. Similarly, punishments, harms, and destructions cannot be translated directly into disasters, betrayals, or illnesses. Only when integrated with the natal chart, luck cycles, annual influences, and real-world conditions can potential themes be discussed, always preserving uncertainty.

Restraint, Transformation, Draining, and Bridging

Facing a strong force, direct overcoming is not the only resolution. A chart may apply counter-restraint, transform through generation, smoothly drain excess energy, or bridge opposing forces with an intermediary element. For example, when Metal and Wood contend, traditions observe whether Water can establish a continuous Metal-generates-Water, Water-generates-Wood sequence; however, Water must genuinely exist in the chart with viable conditions to act.

• Selectively citing only the clash or combination that fits a preconceived narrative when both coexist;
• Declaring an element successfully transformed without evaluating seasonal command, roots, and positions.
