Earthly Branch Hidden Stems & Month Command

Earthly Branches do not contain merely their surface element; according to traditional rules, they conceal one to three Heavenly Stems known as Hidden Stems (Cang Gan). Hidden Stems allow branches to establish Ten Gods relationships with the Day Master and explain how a Heavenly Stem, even if unrevealed on the surface pillars, can still hold roots in the branches. The Month Command (Yue Ling) is the Earthly Branch of the birth month, serving as the foundational anchor for evaluating seasonal strength, patterns, and Useful Gods.

Different classical texts, mnemonic verses, or calculation tools may display minor variations in stem order, command-day divisions, or percentage weights; analysis should declare which reference table is used rather than switching mid-evaluation.

Primary, Middle, and Residual Qi

The stored stem matching the branch's primary element and holding the dominant position is called Primary Qi (Ben Qi); remaining stored stems are known as Middle Qi (Zhong Qi) or Residual Qi (Yu Qi). For example, Yin holds Jia Wood as Primary Qi, alongside Bing Fire and Wu Earth; Shen holds Geng Metal as Primary Qi, alongside Ren Water and Wu Earth.

These terms describe traditional structural hierarchies, not fixed year-round mathematical percentages. Whether a hidden stem exerts influence depends on the Month Command, revelation in the stems, rooting, proximity, and combination/clash dynamics.

What Is the Month Command?

The Month Branch, also called the Month Command (Yue Ling), represents the dominant seasonal qi at the moment of birth. Traditional Ziping BaZi considers the Month Command the foundational starting point for assessing strength, patterns, and Useful Gods; however, a "foundational starting point" does not mean a single factor monopolizing the entire chart.

For example, Wood is generally in season in spring, while Fire is generally out of season in winter; yet any element's actual state may be transformed by rooting, stem revelation, support, combinations, or severe overcoming/draining. The Month Command must be read in concert with the entire chart, never used in isolation to dictate strength or vocation.

In Season, Rooted, and Supported

• In Season (De Ling): An element receives seasonal strength from the birth month;
• Rooted (De Di): A Heavenly Stem finds matching element roots in branch Hidden Stems; the proximity and condition of those roots must be evaluated;
• Supported (De Zhu): An element receives direct support from matching or generative elements;
• In Trend (De Shi): Supporting forces, positions, and combinations collectively establish an overarching momentum.

These concepts organize analytical evidence; they are not points to be mathematically summed. Assessing strength requires simultaneously observing overcoming, draining, exhausting, and structural alterations.

Revealed Stems and Rooting

When a Hidden Stem appears on the surface Heavenly Stems, it is termed "Revealed" (Tou Gan); when a Heavenly Stem finds matching qi in branch Hidden Stems, it is termed "Rooted" (Tong Gen). Stem revelation allows a relational dynamic to manifest prominently, while rooting indicates that a stem has underlying foundation; neither guarantees an auspicious or inauspicious outcome.

When evaluating, ask systematically: On which pillar is it revealed? In which branch is it rooted? Is it in season? Is the root clashed or combined? Are matching elements excessive? What Ten God relationship does this force form with the Day Master?
